A simple bucket test helps separate a real leak from normal evaporation: place a bucket of pool water on a step so the water levels inside and outside the bucket start the same, mark both, turn the pump off, and compare after a day or two. Fill a bucket with pool water and place it on one of your pool steps so the water inside the bucket is level with the pool water around it. Mark both the inside water level and the pool water level with tape or a marker. Turn the pump off and leave both undisturbed for 24 to 48 hours. When you come back, compare the two levels.
