The Service

What leak detection and crack repair actually involve

Want to check it yourself first? Read our guide: How to tell if your pool is leaking.

Leak detection starts with the signs you have already noticed. We isolate where the water is going, working through the most likely locations in order: the shell, the plumbing and equipment, the fittings, and the liner. We narrow it down to the actual source before we recommend anything, so the fix targets the real problem instead of a guess. Crack repair is a separate question from leak detection, and they do not always go together. A crack in the shell or surface can often be repaired as a standalone fix when the rest of the surface is still in good shape. When the crack is a symptom of a surface that is already at the end of its life, repairing the crack alone is unlikely to be the last call you make, and resurfacing the whole pool is usually the better, longer-lasting decision. We will tell you honestly which situation you are in, with no pressure in either direction.

How We Do It

A repair is only as good as the diagnosis behind it

A patch over the wrong spot does not fix a leak, it just delays it. And a crack repair that goes in over an unprepared surface will not hold the way a repair that goes in right will. Our approach to leak and crack work follows the same logic we bring to every job: find the actual source, prepare the surface correctly, and make a repair that lasts, or be honest when patching is not the right answer.

Find the real source first

We start from the signs you have described and the bucket test picture if you ran one. From there, we work through the pool systematically, isolating the shell, the plumbing, the fittings, and the liner, to pinpoint where the water is actually going. We do not recommend a fix until we know what we are fixing. That step saves you from paying for a repair in the wrong place.

Prepare the surface, then repair it properly

Once we know the source, we prepare the crack or the surface correctly before we make the repair. That means opening the crack cleanly, addressing what is underneath it, and applying a repair that bonds properly rather than sitting on top. Chris has built the whole business around this principle: if the prep is right, the repair holds. If it is not, it does not. We are local, and we are the ones who would have to come back, so we do it right the first time.

Honest about patch vs. resurface

Not every crack needs a full resurface, and we will tell you clearly when a patch is enough and your pool has years of life left in the surface. When the surface is already at the end of its life and cracking in multiple places, patching buys you time but not much else, and resurfacing is the call that makes sense for the long run. Because we also resurface pools, including gunite and fiberglass refinishing and ecoFINISH coatings, the same local team can handle it if that is where you land, with no hand-off to a third company.

We are a local KC team, not a franchise that diagnoses a leak and moves on. When we make a repair, we stand behind it, because we are the ones who would hear about it if something went wrong. That is why we diagnose correctly before we start and prep carefully before we finish. And when a patch is not the right answer, we will say so plainly and walk you through the resurface options, including what those cost and what the surface would look like, so you can make the decision that actually makes sense for your pool.

Why Probuilt

Why Kansas City homeowners call us for leak detection and crack repair

One local team, start to finish

We find the leak, repair the crack, and, if the surface is at the end of its life, can resurface the whole pool with the same local team. You are never handed off from a detection-only company to go find someone else for the actual fix.

Local, not traveling

Who is coming back to fix it if something is not right? A team in the KC metro, not a franchise that diagnoses and disappears. We are here because this is where we work.

Prep done right

A repair is only as good as the diagnosis and surface prep behind it. We find the real source and prepare the area correctly before we repair, so the fix holds.

Backed by 10 years of KC pool experience

Our team has been doing pool work in the Kansas City metro for 10 years under Probuilt Pool & Patio. That experience is what we bring to every leak inspection and crack repair.

If it comes to resurfacing, we do that too

We are the exclusive ecoFINISH® dealer in the KC metro, so if resurfacing is the right answer for your pool, the same local team handles that as well, with no hand-off and no starting over with a new contractor.

Cost and Warranty

What to expect on cost for leak detection and crack repair

Leak detection and crack repair are project-based services, and the honest number depends on what is causing the leak and how extensive the repair needs to be. A small hairline crack in a structurally sound surface is a different scope from a crack that runs deep or from a plumbing leak behind the shell. Because the range varies with what we find, the real cost comes from an inspection and a free, no-pressure quote. We do not pressure you into anything after we assess, and if a patch is all your pool needs, that is what we will recommend. Check with your Probuilt rep for current warranty details on your specific repair project.

  • A specific number for the work, not a vague range
  • No obligation and no pressure

Common Questions

Common questions about pool leak detection and crack repair

How do I know if my pool is leaking?

The most common signs are water loss that consistently outpaces what evaporation explains, wet or soggy spots in the yard or near the equipment pad, an autofill device that runs more than it used to, and visible cracks in the shell or deck. A simple bucket test helps separate a real leak from normal evaporation: place a bucket of pool water on a step so the water levels inside and outside the bucket start the same, mark both, turn the pump off, and compare after a day or two. If the pool drops noticeably more than the bucket, that points to a leak. For the full step-by-step walkthrough, read our guide at /blog/how-to-tell-if-your-pool-is-leaking.

How does the bucket test work?

Fill a bucket with pool water and place it on one of your pool steps so the water inside the bucket is level with the pool water around it. Mark both the inside water level and the pool water level with tape or a marker. Turn the pump off and leave both undisturbed for 24 to 48 hours. When you come back, compare the two levels. If the pool has dropped noticeably more than the bucket, that difference points to a leak rather than normal evaporation. It is not a definitive diagnosis, but it is a useful starting point before calling for an inspection.

Can pool cracks be repaired?

Yes, many cracks in a pool shell or surface can be repaired. Whether it is a standalone fix or part of a larger renovation depends on the condition of the rest of the surface. When the surface around the crack is still in good shape, a crack repair on its own is often the right call. When the surface is already showing signs of age in multiple places, repairing the crack and resurfacing the whole pool together is usually the better, longer-lasting decision. We will look at the full picture and tell you honestly which situation you are in. If resurfacing is the right answer, we handle that too, through our gunite and fiberglass pool refinishing service and our ecoFINISH pool coatings.

How much does leak detection and crack repair cost?

Pricing is project-based and depends on what is causing the leak and the scope of the repair. A small surface crack is a different scope from a plumbing or fitting leak, and we cannot give you an honest number until we have seen the pool. The inspection is the first step, and after that we provide a free, no-pressure quote. We do not charge you for telling you what we found.

What if my pool needs more than a patch?

If the surface is already at the end of its life and cracking in multiple places, repairing the crack alone is unlikely to be the last call you make. In that case, repairing the crack and resurfacing the whole pool together is usually the better, longer-lasting spend, and you end up with a surface that looks and functions like new rather than a patched-up one that is already on borrowed time. Because we also resurface pools, including as the exclusive ecoFINISH® dealer in the KC metro, the same local team can handle it from diagnosis through resurfacing, with no hand-off to a separate contractor. You can learn more about your options at our gunite and fiberglass pool refinishing page and our ecoFINISH pool coatings page.
