Both Gunite and Fiberglass, Including Stairs
We refinish both gunite and fiberglass pools, and we also refinish fiberglass stairs, which keeps them from yellowing. You are not turned away because you have the "wrong" kind of pool.
We refinish both gunite and fiberglass pools, including fiberglass stairs that keep yellowing, and the prep is what makes a refinish last. The finish goes on in a day; the prep takes a week. That is why we do it right.

Your Pool Surface

The Service
ecoFINISH vs. traditional plaster: see the full side-by-side comparison
We refinish gunite and fiberglass pools, and we handle the work differently depending on which substrate you have. For a gunite shell, we prepare the failing surface properly and apply a fresh finish so the pool is smooth, clean, and watertight again. That finish can be a traditional plaster or a pebble-style finish such as PebbleTone, or you can step up to ecoFINISH®, a pH-neutral polymer coating that resists staining and algae and holds up longer per the manufacturer. For a fiberglass pool, we prepare and recoat the surface so a faded, chalky, or yellowed shell looks and feels right again. We also refinish fiberglass stairs, which keeps the stairs from yellowing. That is a detail a lot of resurfacing pages skip over, but it matters if your stairs have gone dingy or stained. If we find cracks during prep, we address them rather than coat over them (see our pool leak detection and crack repair service for the full picture). The visitor who wants the complete ecoFINISH story, including colors and how the polymer compares to plaster, can find it on our ecoFINISH pool coatings page and in our ecoFINISH vs. plaster comparison.
How We Do It
The finish goes on in a day; the prep takes a week. That is not a slogan, it is the honest sequence of a refinishing job done right. A new finish is only as good as the surface under it. That means the old, failing material has to come off or be properly prepared, the shell has to be assessed, the substrate made sound, and any cracks addressed rather than coated over. Only then does the new finish go on. Gunite and fiberglass each need their own prep done correctly. The preparation for a plaster surface and the preparation for a fiberglass gelcoat are not the same process, and treating them the same is how a refinish fails early.

Before anything new goes on, we evaluate the existing surface and the condition of your shell, whether gunite or fiberglass. We are looking at what is there, what is failing, and what the substrate needs to be sound before a new finish will hold. If we find cracks at this stage, we repair them. We do not coat over structural problems and hope for the best.

Once the substrate is sound, we apply the new finish. For gunite pools, that may be a traditional plaster, a PebbleTone pebble-style finish, or the ecoFINISH polymer as the premium route. For fiberglass pools, we recoat the surface so it is clean, smooth, and sealed again. If fiberglass stairs are part of the project, we refinish those as well, which keeps the stairs from yellowing going forward.

With the new finish in place, we fill the pool and walk you through the startup chemistry so the surface cures correctly and your water is balanced from the start. Then you get back to a smooth, restored pool. Because we are a local Kansas City team, we are the ones who would have to come back if something is not right, which is the only warranty that actually matters.
We are based in Riverside, MO, and we serve the KC metro, which means the warranty on your refinish is not a number on a sheet of paper from a contractor who has moved on. It is the commitment of a local team that will have to show up if the work is not right. Check with your Probuilt rep for current warranty details on your specific project, but know that the best warranty is prep done honestly the first time.

We are sadly remiss in reviewing them because we've been too busy having a blast enjoying it all summer!!! They are well-deserving of their BBB A+ Rating. We wish they performed every service a house could need, inside and out, as they are THE MOST reliable company we have EVER worked with while also being extremely polite, friendly, and helpful throughout the entire process, in every way possible. We highly recommend them!!!
We are so happy with all of the company's hard work and educating us on all of our equipment! Thank you so much Chris Oswalt, and his whole crew for making our new home edition such a joy for my family!
We could not be happier with the final product. The pool, spa, water features and fire bowls all came out looking really good. Shout out to Dallas who helped us with all these additional features and getting them just right. Highly recommend!
Common Questions
Yes, a faded, chalky, or yellowed fiberglass pool can absolutely be refinished. We prepare and recoat the surface so it looks and feels right again. We also refinish fiberglass stairs, which keeps the stairs from yellowing, a detail that matters if yours have gone dingy or stained over the years.
Older pool finishes simply wear over time. A gunite shell's plaster roughens and stains as it ages. A fiberglass shell's gelcoat fades, chalks, and yellows. Neither is a sign of neglect on your part; it is just what pool surfaces do as they get older. Refinishing restores a smooth, clean surface. For the full list of things to watch for, see our post on the 5 signs it is time to resurface your pool.
The surface itself will tell you. When it is rough underfoot, staining in spots that will not clean up, fading, going blotchy, or your fiberglass shell or stairs are yellowing, it is time. Many inground pools reach that point somewhere in the 15 to 22 year range, but some go longer and some less, depending on water chemistry, climate, and the original finish.
Refinishing is priced per project because every pool, substrate, and surface condition is different. We do not post a starting figure here because a number without seeing your pool would not be honest. The real number comes from a free, no-pressure quote. Our post on pool resurfacing cost in KC covers the factors that drive price and gives useful context on ranges.
It varies by scope and weather, but a typical project runs about one week of active work. Most projects are complete in two to four weeks total from the time we start. We will give you a clearer timeline estimate when we come out for your quote.
Both are legitimate choices. A traditional plaster or pebble-style refinish is the lower up-front cost route and a proven option. ecoFINISH is a pH-neutral polymer coating that resists staining and algae and, per the manufacturer, lasts longer. We offer both, so we are not pushing one over the other. For the full picture, including how they compare on cost, chemistry, and longevity, see our ecoFINISH pool coatings page and the ecoFINISH vs. plaster comparison.
